Urban Heat Sense is a citizen science initiative led by UCL's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) to establish a city-wide network of IoT sensors for real-time air temperature and humidity monitoring. Participants contribute to data collection on Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) and heatwaves, supporting research that informs climate mitigation planning. The project provides open-source, LoRaWAN-based heat sensors that can be deployed in private gardens and public spaces, generating data on microclimate variations to fill in current sensor deserts and data gaps. By engaging local residents, schools, and stakeholders, the initiative promotes collaboration and raises awareness of climate-related challenges in urban areas.
